Winter

9 January 2013

The Sundance ski resort is a short drive from Casa PG. Yesterday, Mrs. PG was in great need of a writing break, so we went there for lunch.

This was what PG saw when he walked out of the restaurant looking toward the base of the ski slope.

  1. PG–Is this with the Nikon D7000? Either way, they’re fantastic. Very nice post processing.

    I need better scenery!

  2. Very nice!
I think I’ll follow your example and take the family to Banff for a day trip. The hot springs are best when the snow is falling.

    • Thank you, Andrew.

Many people have a tendency to hunker down indoors when the snow falls, but going to places where people are overjoyed by new snow provides a nice change of perspective.

      • I absolutely love the third image. All lines lead the eye to that statue and the colors are amazing.

Did you do anything to it or is this straight off the SD card?

        • Thank you, Andrew.

The third image was made from three separate files, one over-exposed, one under-exposed and the third was properly exposed.

It was first post-processed using a program called Photomatix Pro which blended the three images together. The auto-exposure settings of most cameras are completely thrown off by an image with a lot of snow plus the brightness of the snow makes it hard to have it properly exposed at the same time the statue is properly exposed so its details are visible. Blending the three images together allowed me to use the best parts of each of the three images.

I did a little work in Photoshop after finishing with Photomatix. Looking at the photo today, I’m tempted to go back and spend some additional time in Photoshop.

  3. Mrs. PG sure has it rough, I see.

    • Remember, she has to live with me, Dan. She’s earned a great many compensating benefits for doing that.

  4. +20 in the husband catagory for getting the Mrs. out of the house when she needs it!

(And the pictures are gorgeous, too!)

  5. Cool! (And cold!)

The Native American is saying “Oh, spirits of my ancestors! My butt is sooooo cold!”

  7. As pretty as taking the loop through Timpanogous and past Sundance for the fall colors. Can’t really go wrong there any time of year, can you?

    • I’m blessed to live near a lot of beautiful places, Al, but you can’t hail a cab to save your life.

  8. I wish I could have been there…I haven’t seen snow for 12 years — and I miss it! J.

  9. Beautiful work.

I need a break, too. What time are you picking me up, PG?

  10. Beautiful!

  11. You have topography? Neat! (There’s a reason I call my 2nd Alma Mater “Flat State U.”)

In all seriousness, lovely pictures. Mrs. PG made a good choice. :)

  12. Thanks for the kind words, all.

  13. Love your pictures!

  14. PG, I love your photos! Keep sharing them!

  15. These are gorgeous! Out here in rainy California, I could feel the crisp, frosty air. Beautiful.

  16. Nice! I’ve skied there in the winter, done other stuff in the summer. Sundance is out of the way but worth the drive. My favorite resort in the Wasatch is Alta, but Brighton was the closest drive when I lived in SLC. Utah can indeed lay claim to the greatest snow on earth.

  17. Loved seeing the photos of familiar spots — I live 15 minutes from Sundance and the resort is one of my favorite playgrounds. On another subject . . . thanks for your potpourri of views on the current chaos of publishing. I tend to rely on the breadth of the collected perspectives for my balance in that world.

  18. PG – Nice photos. I have enjoyed visits there when I lived in SLC. Now – in South Lake Tahoe – I just look out my study window to see all the snow I need – especially when the decks need some clearing.

  19. We have bare sidewalks here in Michigan at a time when there normally is deep now. Seeing your beautiful photos…I was consumed with Snow Envy. And while I still get out often hiking with my dog River…my true joy comes with x-countrying in the back woods.
I always enjoy your blog. Cheers!

  20. Very pretty! I honeymooned at the Sundance Resort. :)
