Nearly six in ten cell owners used their phone inside a physical store for assistance or guidance on a purchasing decision this holiday season. In the 30 days preceding our early January 2013 survey (the final weeks of the holiday gift-giving season):

  • 46% of cell owners used their phone while inside a store to call a friend or family member for advice about a purchase they were considering.
  • 28% of cell owners used their phone while inside a store to look up reviews of a product to help decide if they should purchase it or not.
  • 27% of cell owners used their phone while inside a store to look up the price of a product, to see if they could get a better price elsewhere.

  1. I always use mine to research electronics. The teenagers at the best buy have no idea about the products, they just know what they’re overstocked on. That’s the stuff they give the big thumbs up to.

  2. I don’t have a smartphone. I just go back to the tablet section and call up reviews on Amazon on a demo model.

    Shame? What is this “shame” you speak of?

  3. What is this “physical store” of which you speak? I haven’t been in one in years, for anything (before you ask, Hubs does the grocery shopping–I LOATHE shopping). Why bother going to a store to look up stuff and comparison shop when you could have done it online at home in your comfy jammies and Mr. Fedex man brings it right to your door?

    Ordered a clock from the Zon last week. It arrived, I opened the box and the front of the clock fell off. Packed it up and sent it back.

    So I now have to find this product in a store and buy it there, because I do not want another faulty delivery.

    Books I am OK with for internet purchase. DVDs, software likewise. Probably computers. But a lot of consumer goods need to be inspected prior to purchase.

    Just sayin.

    • No offense, but do you typically open the box and inspect what’s inside before you take it to the register? Because this can happen at regular stores, too.

      I have been known to do this, and I have been known to be asked to leave for doing it. (Although that only happened the once.) I’m not saying you can’t. I’m saying that if you don’t this criticism is not very reasonable.

  5. Well…why wouldn’t you?

    It’s totally in a person’s interest to seek out the best deal. How could this ability to do instant comparisons possibly be considered anything but a great thing?
