  1. I think the salient point was made by the person who was interviewed who said basically, “yeah, the Apple is all slick and polished but the Google is more for developers.”

Let’s take a quick poll: how many developers are there who like dinking with their gadgets vs. how many people just want to turn something on and play?

    There’s your target audience.

    • Yes, I caught that statement, Kat. And he was wearing a Google name badge.

    • Android vs iPad seems rather like DOS/Windows vs Mac in the 90s. With a Windows PC a developer could plug any old hardware into the box and write some software to make it work, whereas Macs were far less open; you got the hardware you got and maybe you could find a way to get something else to work but why bother when you could use a PC instead?

With tablets you can’t change hardware so easily yourself, but you can build some neat USB device, plug it in and update the Android operating system as required to support it. So I suspect that people developing neat stuff for tablets are more likely to be doing so with Android, while those who are just writing another clone of whatever the latest hot game is are more likely to be doing it on iPad.

  2. Jason Brook Jr.

Nice name, but where be my Google Glass. This is just another tablet. The only difference is Google is making it (not much difference from other tablets me thinks).

By the way, the voice quality on the voice search was very nice. Apple’s speech selection is not too bad, but if they have managed to tune the voice to that level it would be impressive.

(Looks like GG is going to be expensive, meh. I guess I’ll be buying in when they get to second or third generation. <— as an occassional sci-fi writer, I've wanted that product for ages!)

  3. Android is for techies who like to personalize their tech equipment. Apple is for people like the two reporters who basically just want to play games, watch videos, and take pics with their tablets. Most tablet users fall into second category so ipad will dominate tablet market at least for next several years. Big question for Apple is: can they stay big now that Steve Jobs is gone.
