Mickey Spillane on Writing

I’m a commercial writer, not an “author.” Margaret Mitchell was an author. She wrote one book.

Gotta to love Mickey. He tells it like it is.
Love this quote! I was disappointed that I never got the chance to interview him when he was at Murrell’s Inlet in SC. He told a local reporter that he used to spend his days on his fishing boat, and when he needed money, he’d “come ashore and write a book in two weeks.”
Mickey’s comment actually zeroes in on two different goals an author may have in his writing.
One is to aim primarily at crafting a great or profound book or books that may stand the test of time, and then hope for some measure of commercial success, as well.
Another is to aim primarily for a good income by writing entertaining stories that don’t aspire to be much more than that.
Neither goal is, in itself, “superior.” They are just different.
