What a word is truth

31 July 2015

What a word is truth. Slippery, tricky, unreliable. I tried in these books to tell the truth.

Lillian Hellman

  1. Perhaps this was the statement that prompted Mary McCarthy to say of Hellman, “Every word she writes is a lie, including ‘and’ and ‘the.'”

    • Mary McCarthy didn’t come out looking that good, especially with her comments after Hellman’s death when Hellman could no longer defend herself. That is a thoroughly nasty way to get the last word.

Hellman tended it seems to remember things how she wanted to remember them. McCarthy was a bit of a vicious witch toward other writers. Neither come out very well in the end.

  2. “I tried in these books to tell the truth.”

    … as I see it(truth).

  3. I don’t know the history of Hellman, so – taken out of context – this quote is beautifully written.

  4. I like.
