Amazon Books Opening a Second Bookstore in San Diego

7 March 2016

From The San Diego Union-Tribune:

Amazon will open its second physical bookstore, appropriately named Amazon Books, this summer at Westfield UTC mall, according to new signage posted in front of the e-commerce company’s future brick-and-mortar location.

The signage confirms what’s been expected since early February, when Amazon first posted online job ads for Amazon Books store managers, booksellers and device enthusiasts.

“We are excited to be bringing Amazon Books to the University Towne Center Mall in San Diego and we are currently hiring store managers and associates,” said Sarah Gelman, Amazon spokesperson. “Stay tuned for additional details down the road.”

Located at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive, Westfield UTC is an upscale, outdoor shopping mall.

  1. Whenever I see a story about Amazon opening up a bookstore I wonder what the economics would be for them to install an Espresso Book Machine in each store. It would be a great place to take all of their Indie ebook bestsellers (who have limited paper sales) and give them a chance as a print book in a physical retail space. Also, imagine the window signage they could use: 3 Million Books Available Inside!

    Stand up and take credit.

    • Happy to take the credit, though it was an easy call.

The original information said a store would come to “La Jolla or San Diego.” University Towne Center Mall serves an area that technically is in San Diego but that likes to bill itself as being in tony La Jolla (which is across Interstate 5 from the mall).

Besides, UTC Mall is undergoing a massive renovation: the upscale mall is going to be even more upscale, just the kind of place for an Amazon store.
