I didn’t go to bookshops

15 March 2016

I didn’t go to bookshops to buy. That’s a little bourgeois. I went because they were civilized places. It made me happy there were people who sat down and wrote and wrote and wrote and there were other people who devoted their lives to making those words into books. It was lovely. Like standing in the middle of civilization.

  1. That’s ridiculous! I always went to bookstores to buy books. The store was there to sell books. :/

    • No wonder so many bookstores go out of business if the people going don’t buy things. It’s fundamental to the idea of a store.

  2. I’m guessing poor Jerry doesn’t have any libraries near him …

  3. … and there were other people who devoted their lives to making those words into books.

Ah, yes, so civilized! The industry that, in America at least, stole books from across the pond and published them without a penny ever going to the writer. The industry that that still sells books at deep discount, where – again! – the writer sees essentially none of the money. The industry that throws books out on the shelves like throwing spaghetti on the wall. Gah! I could go on. I won’t.

    • The industry that created wholly-owned subsidiaries to reduce already-low royalties to low single digits by self-dealing.

    • “The industry that, in America at least, stole books from across the pond and published them without a penny ever going to the writer.”

Don’t forget to ask Mark Twain about his experiences with British publishers. Then cover your ears.

  4. Is that from a character in one of his books, or is it his words?

  5. Ah, but you have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read it in the original Klingon!

  6. Bourgeois? So he likes to watch people write because that’s civilization, but won’t buy the books since that’s beneath him. I’m so confused. I suppose he inherited an enormous library or has writer friends that give him books. Or he buys them at yard sales. Or doesnt actually read. Who is this a**? No never mind don’t tell me.

  7. I always like to read the comments when there’s a piece/a quote about someone loving paper books or bookstores.

The trouble with youse guys is that you don’t appreciate the odoriferous richness of the printed book or the sacredness of the temples devoted to them. LOL

My only complaint is that they don’t serve wine.
