  81. My heart breaks for you…

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

    ~ W.H. Auden

    On Another’s Sorrow
    By William Blake

    Can I see another’s woe,
And not be in sorrow too?
    Can I see another’s grief,
And not seek for kind relief?

Can I see a falling tear,
And not feel my sorrow’s share?
Can a father see his child
Weep, nor be with sorrow filled?

Can a mother sit and hear
An infant groan, an infant fear?
No, no! never can it be!
    Never, never can it be!
And can He who smiles on all
Hear the wren with sorrows small,
Hear the small bird’s grief and care,
Hear the woes that infants bear —

And not sit beside the next,
    Pouring pity in their breast,
And not sit the cradle near,
    Weeping tear on infant’s tear?

And not sit both night and day,
    Wiping all our tears away?
Oh no! never can it be!
    Never, never can it be!
He doth give his joy to all:
    He becomes an infant small,
He becomes a man of woe,
He doth feel the sorrow too.

Think not thou canst sigh a sigh,
And thy Maker is not by:
Think not thou canst weep a tear,
And thy Maker is not near.

Oh He gives to us his joy,
That our grief He may destroy:
Till our grief is fled an gone
He doth sit by us and moan.

  133. Ow, what a hard message to post. Thanks for letting us know. Your work and words are valued but your family and personal life is more important. We’ll all be here when you are ready to get back. Go well and take care.

  134. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.

  135. My condolences, PG. I know from personal experience that nothing’s worst than losing a child.

  136. I’m so so sorry. I lost my 36-year-old son last month after a three-month roller coaster of life and death, and I’m still trying to cope. I don’t know you (I just recently joined this list), nor do I know your circumstances. Everyone is different, but I’m certain I can say I know exactly what you are going through. Nothing can take away my never-ending pain, but I was comforted by so many kind words from friends, acquaintances, and total strangers. I wish I could tell you things will get better. For me, every day is worse than the previous day. I cry and cry. I can’t even picture my son without sobbing. My heart-felt condolences to you and to your family.

    • Dear Cathy MacKenzie, my family and I read your words you left here and are reaching out to say gentle, not yet, not yet, for your heart is fresh broken, a month out is as though every day is pain and pain, you are right.

We are sorry this has happened, and we send every kind word we can think of.

Just quietly, I’d offer, we found it useful to be near others who had experienced similar long before we did, who could walk with us when we lost our beloved first grandson. We all thought we would lose our minds, never live again, didnt want to live, for what? and be in a pit of pain for life.

But, over time, months and years of time, with the help of others walking with us, holding to what is greater than us, we became experienced in ways we never ever want to be experienced in…. and also after several years had passed, reaching out to help others similarly gutted, and over time, we returned bit by bit back to life again.

Please be good to yourself as you can Cathy, and let others be good to you too. There are several people here who have lost children and grandchildren. Its a club no one wants to belong to. But we do, and we can help a bit to comfort each other.

The pain will not cease exactly, but it will abate, soften, the flood will withdraw, and the times of gutwrenching grief will come farther and farther apart, last for shorter and shorter duration, but also, often be as sharp as the first day. And your beloved son will ever be remembered 100% with such love.

Now, twenty years later, I only cry over losing our boy every few months. But just last night, riding fence line with a friend to make sure all the livestock was in [we had huge snowstorm here], two of the horses who are sisters, would not come into the paddock until we brought their brother into the paddock too. I dont know why/how. I just seeing the loyalty of our horses, laid my forehead on the truck steering wheel and wept like a baby. I’d just say, you never know what will trigger the old grief. But, Id say also that in many ways, those weepings are their own form of profound love…

Everyone is different and has their own ways. Hang in there. I promise our family’s prayers for you and your loved ones.

      • Thank you for your kind words. I didn’t mean to make my condolence reply about me. And I’m so sorry for your loss, too.

        • Cathy MacKenzie I am glad you told us. We’re all rowing together about many many things. Hang in there.

    • I’m so sorry for your loss Cathy.

  156. I am so sorry David and Mrs. Vandagriff.

If there is something I and my family can do, please just say the word and consider it done… That’s a promise.

Jesus is there for all breaths of life and also for the last breath on earth and for the first breath in heaven. Your boy has come through the storm and is safe on the other side. May all surround you with comforts of every kind. I promise my prayers for your every intention.

This poem meant a lot to us when we lost our firstborn, David and Mrs Vandagriff:

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

    Mary Frye (1932)

    Hang in there…

  157. Dear David and Mrs. Vandagriff

I am so sorry to hear this shocking news.

If I and my family can do anything to help you, please say the word and it will be done. That’s a promise.

I know you know: when you go riding out into the canyons in winter, the horses breath and your breath and the snow itself breaths in gusts… together… reminding, I think, that Jesus is with us for every breath, including our last breath on earth and our first breaths in heaven. Your boy has come through the storm David and Mrs. V, and he is safe on the other side. Blessed in a new kind of breath and life.

I promise my prayers to you, for your enduring, that you all be comforted in the ways you best understand, that loving care be showered on you.

Long ago we lost our firstborn grandchild: This poem, in the sense of Creator walking with us in many forms, risen, ever risen… meant a lot to us then, and also ongoing, now…

Hang in there David and Mrs. Vandagriff… all will be clarified by and by.

If I were a neighbor, I would bring you big ham with all the trimmings and wait on you and your wife while you mourn, hug you as you cried, and, as the months passed, help you pick up the pieces of your life again. But alas, we are only virtual acquaintances and I can only send you virtual hugs. (Though if there was a way, I would send that ham.)

Please take care of yourself. And if you need anything–a ham dinner, a donation to a memorial fund, anything–let me know. Let us all know. I am sure I am not the only person who reads your blog who wants to offer help and comfort.

  225. Franklin Kendrick
