In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power — Green Lantern’s light!
The daddy Daffy Duck version is better.
It was something like
In darkest day and brightest night
Yards yadda yadda
With liberty and justice for all
You mean the Duck Dodgers’ version?
Indeed I do
…and then the murders began!
Damn, you beat me to it!
Alfred Bester always did good work.
Even his earlier oath for Alan Scott was pretty good:
“…and I shall shed my light over dark evil.
For the dark things cannot stand the light,
The light of the Green Lantern!”
In recent times, different Corps members have different oaths, as it’s not mandatory, and the other Corps each have their own.
Marc Guggenheim, who wrote the original screenplay for the GL movie had his own oath:
“It’s hard to say where the Oath comes from
Whether it’s cool, or just plain dumb
I can’t think of another hero who’s got one
So I guess it’s just part of what makes GL fun!”
In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight; let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power — Green Lantern’s light! And then the murders began.
Oh, the Green Lantern. I once caused an awkward moment for my boss when he told me the Green Lantern was getting a movie.
“Wait, is this the superhero you told me about? The lame one whose kryptonite is wood?”**
The usually sober-faced editor walking by burst into laughter when he heard me.
**I gather that was in GL’s original incarnation; perhaps the writers realized that a hero who can be taken down with a pencil isn’t really a hero 🙂
