Nothing is original

24 July 2017

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent.

  1. Steals old idea, adds ‘in space’ and ‘foreigners are aliens with strange ideas’, files off the old VIN numbers, come up with catchy title and cover. 😉

  2. This is more profound than people realize. This is the heart of what we are doing.

Watch The Neverending Story, movies 1 and 2, to see what I mean. Ignore 3, it was hijacked by the Nothing.

And to say that Nothing is “original”. Yes, that he is.

  3. And steal like crazy to make your artificial creation, the story, feel as real as you can possibly make it. The right detail will convince your reader you must have been there.

I have never been on Rodeo Drive in LA, but I got a compliment from an actor: “You really know how to write this stuff—like you were tucked in a coffee shop on Rodeo Drive (I lived in L.A. for five years).”
