Democracy is the art and science of running the circus from the monkey cage.
H. L. Mencken
“Democracy is the art and science of running the circus from the monkey cage.” and getting away with it.
Unfortunately, this is 100% true.
Consider that, by the terms of the analogy, we are all monkeys and every one of us is in the cage.
Now, where is this circus of which Mencken speaks?
Democracy — pure democracy — is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.
Never forget that the Athenians voted themselves a tyrant; that the Weimar Republic died by the vote, not by a coup; and that Venezuelans elected Hugo Chavez with a comfortable majority, and he soon abolished Congress and the judiciary by fiat.
Democracy is fine for a while, but when it goes, it goes to Hell in a heartbeat.
They have a saying in Africa, ever since the various countries got their independence and had a (usually brief) fling with democracy:
‘One man, one vote, one time.’
Cynical, yes, but alas, far too often truthful.
They should try and decide there who else in the Animal Kingdom could do better.
