I am thankful the most important key in history was invented. It’s not the key to your house, your car, your boat, your safety deposit box, your bike lock or your private community. It’s the key to order, sanity, and peace of mind. The key is ‘Delete.’

  1. A long time ago, I switched from construction to software development.

    Once, while in construction, I was on a crew that formed up and poured a pad for an industrial asphalt plant. It was three feet thick and had at least three layers of 12-bar on 8 inch centers. Poured all day Friday with a stream of mixer trucks dumping mud continuously from 6:30 in the morning to 7:30 at night. The last hour was triple-time for me because it was over 12 hours (without a break). A good day for my paycheck.

    When I left, the finishers were staging go-kart races riding on gasoline power trowels.

    The next week, we got a new super. The whole pad was off by a foot and it would have to be removed and re-poured because several million dollars worth of equipment, which was already custom built and in transit, wouldn’t fit. Removing that pad cost several times more than both the old and the new pad combined.

    When I switched to software, I marveled at the delete key.
