It was one of those cold, clammy, accusing sort of eyes

12 January 2018

It was one of those cold, clammy, accusing sort of eyes–the kind that makes you reach up to see if your tie is straight: and he looked at me as I were some sort of unnecessary product which Cuthbert the Cat had brought in after a ramble among the local ash-cans.

  1. You’re finding the best quotes, PG.

Almost makes me want to read more of his books.

Unfortunately, though I absolutely love ‘British arch tone,’ I can only take so much of it at a time. A little too madcap for me in large quantities and when having to guess at or look up slang the Brits would take as known.

    But enjoying these.

    • I’m glad you like the quotes, Alicia.

Given the cultural and time differences between the days of Wodehouse and today, it’s possible that watching a high-quality adaptation of Bertie Wooster to the small screen may be the best way to enjoy the writing.

  2. Like PG’s other favorite, Raymond Chandler, Wodehouse made up a lot of slang himself. That may be why readers have to guess. Wodehouse split his life between the UK and the US, much like Chandler. They both graduated from Dulwich College, which was a tony London public school, but I think both were heavily influenced by American English and culture.

I read Wodehouse at my peril. I once picked a book off my Wodehouse shelf while shaving and woke up in Singapore with a full beard.

    Reading PG’s quotes, I feel a binge coming on…
