At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?
Marcus Aurelius
But surely work brings dignity.
I live in South Australia. On Christmas Day, my city was the hottest in the world – 104 degrees Fahrenheit – so I was plenty warm enough and had a lovely huddle beneath the ceiling fan.
All sarcasm aside, thanks for posting this PG. I’ve shared it with like-minded people at work who also found it inspiring.
Now, onwards and upwards toward the work I was born to do: writing wonderful stories!
Oh, so very yes.
There’s something to be said for starting work as the sun goes down, too. The quiet and peace of the night as the husband, son and dog snores provide background music can invoke a great deal of its own type of productivity.
Pretty sure a case can be made for working AND for staying in the blankets cuddling.
Done right and with the right companion that can be most rewarding ‘work’. 😉
And getting up at ‘dawn’ is vastly overrated.
Also, we have automated heat. Pretty sure Marcus Aurelius had to have slaves build the fire.
Funny you mention that as my heater kicks in yet again. (Down to 21F last two nights, should be up to 79-80 Wednesday. 😉 )
