Back Again

This content has been archived. It may no longer be accurate or relevant.

As will be obvious to one and all, we are back to the legacy theme for The Passive Voice (and, yes, PG still likes the look of old faithful although he can see some tweaks he has made to help the new theme work better have messed up the old one around the edges).

Here are two potentially-related problems some visitors to TPV have reported to PG:

  1. At least some Mac users are not able to interact with the site in a meaningful manner.
  2. Some Mac users and some PC users have said they can’t get Load More to work when they work their way down to the bottom of the first several posts and (obviously) the plugin PG used to permit an infinite scroll down to old posts seems not to be working.

If you could comment on your recent (past 4-5 days) experience with TPV, including any problems you encountered AND whether you are using a PC, Mac, tablet, phone, etc., PG would appreciate it.

Once he collects reports of anyone who is having problems, unless a solution that PG hasn’t tried before seems to fix things, he’s going to see if he can contact the theme’s author for guidance, comment, etc. (PG checked on comments from other blog owner/managers to the new theme before he downloaded and installed it and didn’t see any significant complaints from other website wranglers.)

PG has spent quite a bit of time trying to get the look of TPV right with the new theme and is not joyful about starting over from scratch with a new theme, but he can’t have visitors to TPV finding themselves unable to access and enjoy the site.

  1. New theme was working fine for me: iMac OSX 10.9.5, Chrome browser.

But, gee, I forgot how lovely the color and typographic balance was on this Old one. Oh, well. Move on.

    • Agreed about the quality of design of the old site, H.

Once this one is up and running without any reported technical issues, I’ll probably try to tweak the design to make it look better.

  2. Hey PG very very longtime fan who never Comments. I wanted to take a minute and say thank you. I rarely hit your site but am doing so right now from chrome browser on an android smartphone and no issues. I consume all your content via email and am so thankful you provide the opportunity to receive the information this way. I never miss a post and I read every one every day. The only blogger I can say this about and doing so for more years than I can remember. Keep up the great work!

  3. Now I’m in, everything mostly works using my Mac, just the occasional time out loading the page glitch, but that could be the load on the internet.

  4. Seeing the old theme, I prefer the new. Subtle improvements, but more pop to my fickle eye.

I suggest scrapping the infinite scroll. I’m on a Windows PC most of the time and it is buggy– sometimes it doesn’t work. When it does work, it doesn’t do what I want it to. Usually, scrolling is too slow, especially if the bits are sluggish during peak times in my neighborhood. Some hidden time out or race when the network slows might be the source of the bugs, when I think of it.

Most often, I know the post from a week or so ago that I am looking for. “Search” or “Post Categories” works, but I’d rather not have to think through choosing categories and search parameters when I know the approximate age of the post.

My preference, which could be me only, would be for something like an “older posts” sidebar that would give me a page of digests, (item title plus x words with a “more” link to take me to the full post.) I would avoid putting entire posts on the wire for this function. Too much data saps performance and puts you into edge cases where the bugs live.

For my sites, I use a sidebar widget “Older Blogs” that comes with the free theme I use (maybe the WordPress database itself). You see it on many sites. It lists “Months”. Click on the month and you get digests of all the posts from the month. Very similar to the way your “Post Categories” sidebar works. You would need something similar, but hashing by month might yield an unmanageable number of posts. (Your productivity amazes me PG.)

    • Glad to here that you like the appearance of the new theme, Marv.

Thanks for the suggestions about infinite scrolling and Older Posts.

  5. PC, latest version of FireFox.

No problems interacting with the site (once the login issue was fixed, that is). The “Load More” button did not work – but absolutely not an issue for me, as the scroll was barely a “hiccup” on my machine.

But, okay, a fix for Macs is probably needed. A lot of creatives are in that country…
