  1. I just sent 3 days at a regional SciFi convention behind my author table.

    While the circulating crowd of costumes and impersonations was certainly amusing, I agree that the full-facial masks are very anti-social. You can’t engage with them, chat with them, etc.

    Of course, they’re not there to engage; they’re there for ritual display.

  2. I don’t know about Wilde, but to me a masked person is inherently not trustworthy. If I see someone in a mask and it’s not Halloween or a costume party, my default setting is that I should keep a weapon handy. I’m guessing my reaction isn’t too unusual, hence those horror movies featuring masked weirdos. Something about the person having a fixed expression no matter what they’re saying, or what’s going on, is just really creepy.
