  1. I’m not sure whether this is true but it is reputed that this is actually a popular distortion of the following quotation from volume 6 of the supplementary dispatches:

    As Lord Chesterfield said of the generals of his day, ‘I only hope that when the enemy reads the list of their names, he trembles as I do

    so “these men” are actually some of the officers assigned to his command. Earlier in the dispatch he indicates one is mad, one “not wise” and another so incapable that he has been appointed to the staff for fear that he would destroy any regiment he might command.
