I’d much rather have 15 people arguing about something than 15 people splitting into two camps, each side convinced it’s right and not talking to the other.

Both sides have to WANT to talk to each other first.
Yup.
First they have to accept the other side has a right to a different opinion. If they just want to use the other side as a bogeyman to rile up their own camp nothing good will come of it.
Linus Torvalds is a personal hero of mine. He plays the role of benevolent dictator of the Linux project quite well. (Most of his rants, which seem unwarranted in isolated news stories, make a lot more sense in context.)
In any case, creating the operating system kernel that powers almost all of the Internet and most servers, smart phones, tablets, and embedded hardware devices is no mean feat. Only possible by having tens of thousands of contributors, but Linus’s job is to make sure that the contributions all add up to something usable.
