It’s going to be interesting

It’s going to be interesting to watch presidential elections in around 2040, when voters can dig up candidates’ teenage angst pics and posts from old social media and discussion forum archives.

  1. This may partly explain why both major candidates in the late U.S. presidential donnybrook were pushing seventy. They had the luxury of making most of their mistakes in a world where nobody was pointing digital cameras at them.

  2. I suspect that by 2040, everyone will have been the subject of an online Two Minute Hate. Everyone will know someone (or be the someone) who has something embarrassing about themselves posted online.

“I got you talking trash on Twitter in 2013!”

“Nobody uses Twitter these days, honey. Anyway, I have pictures of you drunk on 15MinutesofFame.com.”

“You know who else is on that site? Your mama.”

Politicians may have less incentive to Go There if every one else is There, too. They may have to get more sophisticated if they want to demonize opponents … which may or may not be terrifying.

  3. We’re already at that point.

The WH press secretary is being mocked for what he has said on Twitter. For example, he went to a cosplay convention in 2011, and complained about the ice cream selection at a sports arena.

It was all weak stuff, and it wasn’t funny or damaging.

    • Yes, but the current White House Press Secretary’s job is to distract the media while Trump gets on with the real work. While they’re making fun of cosplayers, Trump is building his wall.

Besides which, making fun of cosplayers will probably cost the Democrats some votes in the next election.

  4. By 2040 we’ll have direct neural connection. Secrets will not exist. Leaders will be unnecessary. Harmony will rule and differences will become obsolete. Resistance will become… futile.

    • If you look for your elected head of state to be a capital-L Leader, the problem may lie in your expectations.

Seriously, do you think that video is damning because Trump can’t sing? Singing isn’t part of the President’s job. Or is it because you have the idea that he actually is a hick from the sticks, as opposed to a born and bred New Yorker who dressed up as a hick for laughs once?

What exactly is the problem here?

      • We’ve had actors for presidents before, this just shows he more talented than that other one was (and on Hee-Haw, singing badly was what the guest was supposed to do on some of those skits!)
