  1. I don’t understand why someone hasn’t come up with a solar-powered tablet like my solar-powered scientific calculator that I bought back in 1994. It still works and never needs to be plugged in. I hate having to stop and recharge.

And I gotta say, that desk in the beginning looked pretty tidy to me.

  2. I am doing very much the same thing on my iPad Pro using my Apple Pencil I have my choice of apps (Noteability, OneNotes, Evernote), but I prefer GoodNotes. It feels quite comfortable to write just as I would on a notepad. My handwriting is searchable, converts to text, documents and photos are easily imported and exported. Everything is stored on the cloud of my choice, or just my iPad. I don’t need to look for Wi-Fi, my iPad has a cell connection that’s always on so I can send, import or export at will. I can access and manipulate my notes from my iPhone as well. It has definitely replaced my notebooks. The only difference I see is the non-glare screen. Definitely a benefit, but not worth the linconvenience of another single purpose device.

  3. reMarkable – $529 + Marker – $79 (Am I the only one who thinks that selling the Marker separately is a stupid idea?)

With Folio (whatever that is) – $79, total – $716.

    Pre-order offer (tablet+marker+folio) – $429.

    Estimated ship date: September 2017.

    • You sell the Marker separately because you’re likely to lose it and need to replace it. Folio is probably a cover.

My issue is that sometimes you just need multiple things open at once, and feeding everything thru a single window, no matter how cool, is just constraining.

Plus it’s large for use as an eReader.

And I agree about no Dropbox — bad move.

  4. On the one hand, this would be GREAT for my job, it would let me fill forms and add drawings and otherwise replace my notebooks and clipboard. And its a reader too.

I WISH such a tool had been available when i was doing thesis and dissertation research.

On the other hand, I could buy a decent laptop or desktop with much more capability for the price.

I just can’t justify paying that much.

      • When the price goes down AND it can convert handwriting to text reliably, then I think they’ll really have something.

Also I read in the Features section that any document used on the tablet resides in THEIR cloud. I would prefer it read off my cloud (e.g. Dropbox) OR thumbdrive.

        • “Also I read in the Features section that any document used on the tablet resides in THEIR cloud.”

That’s a deal-breaker for me as well. I’ll (reluctantly, and with my own backups) put stuff on cloud servers owned by Apple, Amazon, Google, or the like, but I’ve seen too many early-stage startups crater (taking the data of their users along with them).

Then there are the privacy implications…

        • What you and Tony said. I want my work in my control, be that on my hard drive or in “cloud” storage that I pay for. Data loss, surprises in the fine print that grant the “free storage” place access to and rights to your work . . . nope.
