  1. Oops, forgot to add:

Some of my readers ask me what a “Serial Port” is. The answer is: I don’t know. Is it some kind of wine you have with breakfast?

    • In case you’re serious, it’s an electronic communication connection that predates the Universal Serial Bus (USB) currently used on computers.

It was used for printers and modems and setting one up could be a black art.

It was found on early computers like the Kaypro, Osborns, Apples, and original ms-dos machines.

      • I wasn’t. 😉

In fact on the table next to me is an old tower computer whose hard drive still still boots to windows 2000 server, complete with serial and parallel ports.

(The reason it’s on the table is I got a wild hair and decided the old beast could host a few ‘newer’ devices, like a pair of Raspberry Pi’s and a tinker board computer – any of which can out-think the old main system board.)

((The car stereo also being added is because my wild hairs come with plenty of nuts! 😉 ))

  2. When the second plane hit the other tower I was reminded of a line from the movie ‘The Art of War’ where a guy wonders why the terrorist waited so long before blowing up a bus. The other guy looks around and says, “He was waiting for the cameras/press.” (Yes, I know that wasn’t the actual ‘why’ of the timing, but that was what I thought as there were plenty of news stations there to watch it go in.)

I’ve used it a couple of times in my stories as there are no heroes if the event isn’t known to have even happened/stopped (or it gets covered up.)
