J.K. Rowling Still Free from the Speech Police

From The Wall Street Journal:

An appalling political effort to force the people of Scotland to express only government-approved thoughts on “gender” has so far been unable to conquer the country’s most successful expresser of thoughts. Megan Bonar and Katy Scott report for the BBC:

Social media comments made by JK Rowling challenging Scotland’s new hate crime law are not being treated as criminal, Police Scotland has said.

The Harry Potter author described several transgender women as men, including convicted prisoners, trans activists and other public figures.

The new law creates a new crime of “stirring up hatred” relating to protected characteristics.

The force said complaints had been received but no action would be taken.

Ms. Rowling responds on X:

I hope every woman in Scotland who wishes to speak up for the reality and importance of biological sex will be reassured by this announcement, and I trust that all women – irrespective of profile or financial means – will be treated equally under the law.

Libby Brooks adds in the U.K.’s Guardian:

As the Scottish government’s contentious hate crime law came into force on Monday, the author… posted a thread on X… listing sex offenders who had described themselves as transgender alongside well-known trans women activists, describing them as “men, every last one of them”.

She stated that “freedom of speech and belief are at an end in Scotland if the accurate description of biological sex is deemed criminal”.

Agence France Presse notes more of Ms. Rowling’s commentary:

The law, she said in a lengthy online criticism, is “wide open to abuse by activists who wish to silence those of us speaking out about the dangers of eliminating women’s and girls’ single-sex spaces”.

“I’m currently out of the country, but if what I’ve written here qualifies as an offence under the terms of the new act, I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment,” she wrote.

  1. A lot of this is the consequence of ideology on both sides of the debate.

A large part of it driven by the left who have been seduced into identity politics and think that ideology trumps sense, whereas ideology is just a tool to view the world through.

The same goes for the right who do exactly the same thing, mirroring the left.

Some transsexuals will pass as their assumed gender pretty much all the time, some transsexuals will pass in some situations, and some transsexuals will never pass in their preferred gender (both male to female, and female to male transsexuals).

I’ve been called a body fascist for stating the obvious.

As for whether a transsexual male of female are a man or a women, they’re transsexuals, which means what it says.

    • The issue isn’t so much what they are but what they do and what it does to others.
The spaces they invade, the harm they do.

A teenaged swimmer should not have to see a decade of effort and training to prove herself be negated by a six foot two, *failed* male swimmer in drag taking away the award rightfully theirs.

Or be attacked in a school bathroom by a sexually active male that gets a pass for crossdressing and gets protected until *he* does it again.

      https://news.yahoo.com/judge-rules-loudoun-county-teen-131413442.html

Or be forced to leave a designated safe space, a women’s bathroom (and eventually, sorority) to get away from a nude *rampant* male “identifier” leering at them, who again cloaks themselves under the label.

If it walks like a duck and acts like a (perverted) duck, it *is* a duck.

Blind absolutism helps neither actual, clinical transexuals (a tiny outlier minority), nor women, a *majority* denied hard earned rights earned by centuries of struggle. And the actual transexuals do themselves no favor by allowing the sick and twisted or merely opportunistic to hide among them. By the failure to speak out against the “identifiers” of convenience they are bringing unto themselves actual, justified, harm.

Nicholas Meyer got it exactly right in his STAR TREK movie: “The needs of the many must supercede the needs of the few.” Especially when the few are miscreants and opportunists.

While Scotland works to silence common sense and reality, across the Atlantic dozens of states are heavy handedly responding with blanket laws and, sadly, it is understanable. When you throw away nuance and insist on absolute solutions you *will* get absolute “solutions”.

Actions breed reactions and divide and conquer ideology or not, the 52% at risk *will* be protected regardless of who or what gets steamrolled to get there. This will not end well for the alphabet faction.

  2. I love that she’s using her f-you money to stand up for what’s right. It’s the sort of heroism she infused her Potter books with, and it’s so boss that she’s inviting the Scottish government to come step to her. She’s got her brass knuckles ready to go.

I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment.

    Nice slapdown.

So is Riley Gaines, unlike NOW.

Well, yeah. Feminist groups lost all credibility decades ago. Supporting men who actively hurt women for the sake of political clout? Yep, that sounds like something they would do. On the sports front, I was surprised that the men who infiltrated women’s locker rooms did so unharmed. My primal reaction would have been to visit correction upon them just in self-defense. And to make life deeply unpleasant for their enablers. I’m glad Planet Fitness stock is falling; they were dead to me when they started proudly proclaiming they were going to allow perverts to invade the women’s locker rooms.

  3. Her best tweet:

“If they go after any woman for simply calling a man a man, I’ll repeat that woman’s words and they can charge us both at once.”

    100% right all the way.
I especially liked her tweets about the serial killer and the peeper.

(My sister ran track in high school. Today shd wouldn’t bother.)

    Actions breed reactions.
