I’ve Always Been Attracted

I’ve always been attracted to the more revolutionary changes. I don’t know why. Because they’re harder. They’re much more stressful emotionally. And you usually go through a period where everybody tells you that you’ve completely failed.

  1. I don’t claim to truly understand the insides of computers, but I was a little surprised to see Apple offering at least some of their new iMacs with 5400 RPM spinning drives, not SSDs. Isn’t that retrograde rather than revolutionary?

    • Depends on the use.

SSDs are much faster, but the old spinning rust can hold more per dollar right now and doesn’t run out of write cycles.

While SSDs are getting better at how many write cycles each block can handle – the less data on the drive allows the cycles to be spread out among all the free blocks – where if the drive is close the ‘full’ fewer data blocks are free to be reused which will kill the SSD sooner.

So, do you need the speed or the storage? Each has a place.

(FYI in my personal use I had a netbook come in with a 320GB SSD which I imaged to a 1TB HD for normal use. the SSD is boxed and there if the HD fails or gets corrupted and I ‘try’ to remember to back the think up every now and then. Oh, another reason to move to rust was the fact the rust currently has over 500GB of data/programs on the drive. 😉 )

  2. Ha!

I wonder what he would have thought of the EU’s Article 11 & 13 that appear to have passed.

I feel some revolutionary changes coming soon to webs near you. 😉
