Reading a book without a preface is like arriving at someone’s house for dinner, and being conducted straight into the dining room.

The OP assumes that said diner isn’t late to the party in the first place, in which instance of course being conducted directly to the dining room is appropriate.
Or you could start with a bang and sweep the reader along without dulling his senses with an aperitif first.
I’ve attended a few dinner parties where I would have appreciated something to dull my senses, K.
