The least scary future I can think of is one where we have at least democratized AI…[also] when there’s an evil dictator, that human is going to die. But for an AI, there would be no death. It would live forever. And then you’d have an immortal dictator from which we can never escape.

  1. I vote for Windows.

No, I vote for Linux. And I’m a Make Computing Great Again extremist demanding a particular Linux distribution.

No, I vote for the Mac’s peculiar implementation of XWindows.

And lurking in the background there’s… it’s close to Halloween, so just imagine some scary music and prominent foley footsteps† approaching… z/VM.370. Dundundunnnnnnnn.

So we’ve already got “democracy.” How’s that going?

† Doesn’t anyone in a scary or action movie ever wear sneakers? What is it with the leather-soled shoes being worn into potentially adverse conditions? Even the tradition-bound military did away with leather soles on combat boots before Vietnam…

    • I’ve come to believe democracy doesn’t scale up well, even in cellular, federal systems.
      In the end, tribalism rules.
      (bah, humbug)

  2. “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream”?

Although it’s not clear to me why you couldn’t just unplug the bloody thing. Or upload a virus. When my mother’s Amazon Echo Show wasn’t “behaving” my younger nephew shouted, “Alexa, self-destruct!” I’m sure something similar happened in an episode of Star Trek or something.
